PM wishes Tamils a very happy ‘Tamil New Year’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has wished Tamils all over the world a very happy and prosperous ‘Tamil New Year’ on the eve of dawn of ‘Vilambi’ today, the 14th April.

Along with Tamils, those celebrating a New Year would also include Malayalees (who celebrate the day as ‘Vishu’ and by the people of Odisha, Assam and West Bangal (as ‘Baisakhi’).  A regular on his social networking site, the Prime Minister has recorded his wishes in Tamil, Odisha and Bengal so as to cater to the respective population.

The Prime Minister wishing Tamils a very happy New Year in Tamil on his official Twitter page assumes huge significance.  It speaks volumes of his wish in reaching out to the Tamils especially in the backdrop of the ‘black-flag’ protest demonstration that he was greeted with when he visited Chennai on Thursday to inaugurate a Defence Expo and to take part in the diamond-jubilee celebrations of Adyar Cancer Institute.

“தமிழ்ப் புத்தாண்டை முன்னிட்டு தமிழர்கள் அனைவரும் வாழ்த்துகள்; வரும் ஆண்டில் தமிழர்கள் விருப்பங்களும் விழைவுகள் அனைத்தும் ஈடேற வேண்டுகிறேன்” thus said the Prime Minister’s ‘Tamil’ tweet, thus becoming the first Prime Minister in the country to wish Tamils in Tamil.

It may be noted that while the Prime Minister wished Tamils that all their wishes and aspirations would get realized in the New Year, he remained silent and deviated from saying anything on the burning ‘Cauvery Management Board’ issue!
