Over the years many Kollywood legends have tried to bring Kalki's 'Ponniyin Selvan' to the big screen including MGR and Kamal Haasan. Now in the modern era with advanced technology two versions of the epic are in the making. The first one is directed by Mani Ratnam having the huge star cast of Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prabhu, Jayaram, Rahman, Sarathkumar and Lal. The other is a web series developed by Soundarya Rajinikanth that is expected to stream sometime this year.

Saneeshwar Animations is now making an animated version titled 'Vandhiyathevan: Ponniyin Selvan Vol 1' featuring MGR and Jayalalitha and the first single 'Ulagam en ulagam naan utharavittaal vidiyum' was released on January 17th which is also the birth anniversary of MGR. The film made in several Indian languages is directed by Dhavachelvan with Madhan Karky penning the lyrics and Santhosh Jayakaran rendering the song.
