Priyanka Reddy issue: Tension prevails as thousands assemble

Earlier today, spontaneous protests took place in Shadnagar, Hyderabad, against the brutal rape and murder of Priyanka Reddy (26). Some slogans were shouted on the occasion.
Hours later, thousands more assembled at the Shadnagar Police Station and started raising slogans against the police. People from nearby villages have joined the protests without notice. The police, unable to control the mobs, locked up the station and stayed indoors. Youths in their early 20s broke a barricade, raising angry slogans, a source says.
The police have appealed for calm on the part of the residents of the area.
There has been anger over how the police responded to the complaint of Priyanka's sister even as the heinous crime was being perpetrated by four men. A cop is reported to have suggested to them that Priyanka must have eloped. Also, it took about four hours for the FIR to be registered only because Priyanka's family members were asked to shuttle between two police stations because of confusion over the jurisdiction.
