Here is an interesting backstory of how Ranjith landed the opportunity to direct the second film with Superstar Rajinikanth even as 'Kabali'- their first outing is still running in theatres as a blockbuster hit film.

A few weeks after the release of 'Kabali', Ranjith got a call from Rajinikanth's daughter Soundarya Ashwin asking him to meet her father at home. Rajini has apparently conveyed to Ranjith during this meeting, that he is very happy with 'Kabali' and felt so comfortable working with him. The Superstar also gave Ranjith, the surprise offer by asking whether they can do another film together and whether he has any story for him.

Soon after that Ranjith came up with one line which has impressed the Superstar and he immediately asked him to develop it as a script and also said that his son-in-law Dhanush will produce the film.

Sources reveal that Ranjith will take a few months to finish the script and the shooting is expected to commence only by August 2017. Moreover, it has now become almost certain that the new film will have an altogether new story and it will not be the sequel to 'Kabali'.

Rajinikanth is presently working on '2.0' directed by Shankar which is expected to hit the screens in October 2017.
