Refugees. They have pains written all over the face. They flee their homelands leaving behind the house and property only to cross the border for their survival. The ethnic strife in Sri Lanka witnessed scores of Tamil refugees crossing the Rameshwaram coast to seek refuge in Tamil Nadu recently.
Apparently moved by the life and troubles of these refugees, who stay in various refugee camps in the coastal Tamil Nadu, director SelvaM has come up with Rameshwaram. It is a movie on Lankan refugees, their untold miseries and romance of one such Lankan Tamil youth in Tamil soil, but nothing controversial, says the director.
No sooner I penned the script; I decided to approach Jeeva for the role. He is one young hero, who has a penchant to do different roles. Impressed by the storyline, he readily agreed to work in the movie, he says.
He has done tremendous home work to get his act right. He lost some weight, trained well to the Lanka Tamil dialect well, adds the director.
In a nutshell, the movie revolves around Jeeva, who is forced to leave his hometown in Sri Lanka to take refuge in Rameshwaram. He comes across Bhavana, daughter of a rich and influential man (Lal) in the locality. Moved by the good nature of Jeeva, Bhavana develops a soft corner for him. It slowly blossoms into romance.
Jeeva, who has won the accolades for donning different roles, says, "It is my delight to work in the movie. I visited several refugee camps and watched them from close quarters. I imbibed a lot from them. Shooting in the sets replicating the refugee camps really moved me".
On sharing the screen with Bhavana, Jeeva says, she is a talented actress in the industry today. "We worked comfortably in the sets. Everything was spontaneous and natural".
Niru's music will be a major boost for the movie. All the songs have come good. They are a right mix of melody, sure to captivate the listeners, says the director.
Rameshwaram is all set to hit the screens later this month.
