Ranveer Singh on ‘Lootera’: I did this film for Vikramaditya

The current heart throb of the Bollywood Ranveer Singh who stole everyone’s heart with his former film is now set to show his serious side in this upcoming poetic drama ‘Lootera’ directed by Vikramaditya Motwane. IndiaGlitz caught this young and enthusiastic actor for random chat.

What is the response to the promo you got?

I have shown this promo to many industry people, directors. Everybody has really very positive response. So the positive response was coming since the trailer wasn’t shown to public. Once it came out the social media, its visual, its look and feel, music, I guess everyone liked it. First teaser was superb. Promo material is the biggest decider and designing factor for the audience whether they want to see the film or not. I am very happy that all the promo gardened acceptance from the audience. It got lot to do with lovely music and the beauty of the visual and i am very happy with the response.

How was working with Sonakshi and your link up with her?

I am very very happy that Vikramaditya has selected Sonakshi. She got selected because she fit in the character. Nobody can out charm on that look. She is totally today’s girl. But with her looks and mannerism she convinced that she is from that era. I had a great chemistry with her. I remember we had this rumours about our link ups before we started working on Lootera. We first time met during the look test. She was already present and I entered the room and there was so many people and she said " aree boyfriend". That was the credit to her coolness that broke the ice. We had a very friendly relationship. She is very easy to work with because she is very ease and effortlessness to the approach of the work. When Vikram and I become stressed and hyper then she just gave her calming on the set. The thing I learnt from her that I should be more pleased about my work. Films are about capturing life moments and I didn’t not realise she is spontaneous and organic and that’s why she delivers effortlessly, organically. On the screen it does not look like she is acting. She flows like water. She is tremendously gifted. She is the big star in mainstream cinema. This film will give her more depth to her performance. This will add more significant film in her performance account.

You are linked with your co-star. Is Ranveer is flirty?

Ranveer is flirty.

According to you definition of flirty?

I am very generous with my compliments. I tend to see beauty in everyone. I guess all my traits are tagged me as flirt. I’m not trying to be perpetrated. I don’t have a problem being tagged but I have problem to be tagged as a general. When you tag somebody then you are defining those people, limiting those people. I believe each person is complex and infinite. Tag means putting them in a box. I don’t subscribe to it.

Your paternal grand mom was and actress too. So did she evoke actor in you?

I wish I had my chain today. My granny she loved acting. She was primarily a homemaker. She had three kids. And she was busy with all but sometimes she pursues her passion which is sometimes acted in the films. It is like "shouk hai toh kar liya". She was in Boot Polish and Soni Mahiwal. She was the first person to push me into this. She used to always encourage me. She is the first person who made me watch Sholay. She keeps making me watch movies and keep encourage me to dance. She used to play music in the house and make me dance. She used to encourage me to take part in all activities drama, elocution, and dance. I remember the joy and thrill of performing she was there and that she made it happened. There was a birthday party was happening in the Juhu and they were playing Jumma Chumma and she made me to dance on it for just for her own entertainment and amusement. In the middle of the garden she was sitting in the chair and I was dancing for her on Jumma Chumma. The whole party gathered and saw my dance and started clapping and whistling and felt so amazing. So i experience the thrill and joy of performance for the first time. That was the memory of getting thrilled out of performance.

In Lootera you have pricked yourself with needle. Why?

I got shot in Lootera. I didn’t experience that level of pain. I don’t know how to act when you are shot that you have never being shot before. I thought it would be good way to know the real physical pain on myself. Then you use such thing to amplify your performance. I used to pin myself and you feel numb for a while and right before the shot I use to clap on it so the pain which was held out there used to regenerate and then body language used to come. My peers used to make fun of me specially Priyanka and Arjun. They really ridicule me and take my case over and over again. I collaborated with Vikramadiya because I don’t know how to play. I thought of this technique. I hope it work let see.

How was working with Anurag Kashyap for the first time?

Well When I Joined Lootera, Vikram and I were part of it and Sonakshi came later. Anurag has written the dialog of Lootera. I actually agreed to the script bound to bound and we really executed what we had on paper. But creatively I didn’t communicate that much. And Ekta come in much later. My whole creative interaction was with Vikram. He was the person I loved his first film and wanted to collaborate with him. So he was the first step then script and the characters and then everybody else. My whole focus was Vikramaditya. He is very special director. I know he has a great talent that people will notice after lootera. He will have long and vast career. In the coming years he will be denoted as a great director.

The look of your character in the film?

There is a making that I tweeted that how we came about this look. Vikramaditya was very clear what he wanted. There is a very charming quality. He looks like a good guy. That is integral and one of the driving forces on the surface he is a good guy that you can trust very easily. There is an amalgamation of the look of Dev Anand and James Dean. I completely went with it. I have no input in it. I received great number of compliments for the clean shave look. I appreciate that I am happy.

You are just two films old and still you got a good fan following?

I think I made a strong start. I knew it was important because I know I wouldn’t get more chances as I am not from the industry. I know I have to make a strong impression with my first film. It was the do and die film. And I managed to do it. I think lot of good work coming my way the potential I showed for me from my first film. I think I haven’t showed my full potential yet not even 1%. I am happy that I am able to make a mark. I want to keep continuing good work not b
