The giant sinkhole, off the coast of Belize, might seem shallow superficially, but it is, in fact, a cavern large enough to accommodate two giant aircraft with room to spare. Sir Richard Branson and Jacques Cousteau’s grandson are organizing an expedition down the deep, dark bottom of the sinkhole in a submarine which will be streamed live and broadcasted globally.

What lies in the deepest section of the great blue hole has remained a mystery since scuba divers usually don’t plummet deeper than 130 feet, hence this feat will be a first of its kind and by far the most comprehensive exploration.

Aquatica Submarines’ chief pilot Erika Bergman is joining Branson and Cousteau on their voyage hoping to collect scientific data on various marine aspects, one of which might help in providing insight on the fall of the Mayan Civilization. The broadcast will be live from 9 – 11 pm on Sunday, December 2 on the Discovery Channel.
