Right to privacy violated by Aadhaar?

After a slew of petitions against making the Aadhaar mandatory, the Supreme Court has set up a 5 judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India J S Khehar to look into whether Aadhaar has violated right to privacy. Petitioners cited finger prints and iris scan among the personal details that are collected as a violation of right to privacy.

K K Venugopal, Attorney General of India, said that a nine judge Bench, not a 5 judge Bench, must hear the case as an 8 judge Bench had earlier ruled that right to privacy was not a fundamental right.

The court clarified that this Bench will take into consideration the decisions of the 8 judge Bench, and a nine judge Bench will be set up, if required. The hearings will commence on July 18.
