Kantara actor-director Rishabh Shetty rejects idea of a Hindi remake

Kannada film 'Kantara', which was released few weeks back, has emerged as the latest pan Indian sensation. Made on a small budget of 16 crore rupees, it has garnered 267 crores on box office so far and apart from that, it has also garnered praises from critics, fans as well as other celebs throughout the country. Since Bollywood is always on a lookout to remake even moderately successful southern movies, it is only a matter of time that someone plans a Hindi adaptation of 'Kantara'.

However, in a recent media interaction, director Rishabh Shetty, who also plays the lead in this film, has stated that he would like 'Kantara' to be remade. He also shared that the film was only meant for regional audience and that the Hindi dubbed versions were planned later. Shetty said, "It was decided later on. I wanted to make a film about our soil, tradition and culture in coastal Karnataka that the rest of Karnataka isn’t fully aware of. I believe that more regional is more universal. I was exploring the struggle between man and nature through the tradition of ‘Daiv’. And I also wanted to tell the story of our agriculture, it to be recognized as Kannada cinema. That’s what has happened. Initially, we had thought of going to OTT. But after the release, the word of mouth spread like wildfire."

The actor/filmmaker agreed that since 'Kantara' was dubbed in Hindi, it doesn't need a remake. Rishabh also stated, "To play such characters you have to believe in the roots and culture. There are many big actors in the Hindi film industry whom I admire. But I am not interested in remakes."
