Saaho to WAR: Films doing great business despite slowdown

India is said to be amidst an economic slowdown. However, if the moolah that several blockbusters are raking in is anything to go by, Indians are doing pretty well.

Analysts present some recent box-office data to drive home the point. "A handful of Bollywood movies that released since August 15 have collected Rs 700 Cr. This excludes Gandhi Jayanti's releases (namely, 'Sye Raa' and 'WAR'). If there indeed is a slowdown, how has this been possible?" a commentator asks.

Says psephologist Dr. Praveen Patil, "After mega festive sales have begun everywhere, now early reports from distributor networks indicate a historic week for the Hindi film industry in terms of footfalls and earnings. Amazing degree of consumer confidence in a supposedly gloom and doom economic environment."

'WAR' is expected to rain money big-time, so also 'Sye Raa'. Consumers are buying new models of smartphones. "Recently, there was much hullabaloo over the decline in the sales of Parle-G biscuits. It was much ado about nothing. It's terrible untruth that people are penniless and jobless. People are looking for better jobs and that's the only truth," a commentator says.
