Why Malayalam cinema is not getting enough audiences is a question that could be just answered by citing the reasons such as the old fashioned treatments and illogical story telling methods, as you see in the latest 'Sadgamaya'- a presentation from one of the members of the year's National Award jury, Harikumar. From creating a psychiatrist who resembles the most known character in Malayalam cinema (Mohanlal in Manichitrathazhu) to the progressive disintegration as in 'Thaniyavarthanam' and the treatment styles that also resembles many films in the recent times,' Sadgamaya' stumbles in creating anything fresh in terms of presentations.
The movie has Navya Nair as Yamuna who is preparing for the big day in her life that is for her marriage. In comes a letter from her psychiatrist Ravi Varman, who had treated her for schizophrenic disorder, three years ago. Ravi Varman now wants to meet her, as she is soon to witness some critical of the circumstances. Ravi Varman, according to his unsatisfied wife Jyothi (Swetha Menon), is more like a mentally challenged person than most of his patients, treating only one patient at a time, that too in an alien hill bungalow. Though the mental issues and associated unsettling hallucinations faced by Yamuna are confusing, Ravi Varman finds the root causes of continuous 'vulture episodes' through his travels into the subconscious mind and starts his treatments, finally to get the girl disowned by even her parents.
The major problem with the movie is that it hardly displays any intensity of many wisely done Mollywood movies of the past that dealt with the travels of mind. A rather ordinary attempt with little impact, the charcterisations too lack needed depth, though the visuals by Sunny Joseph and M Jayachandran's music are fine.
Going with the Suresh Gopi's recent performances, this too appeared dull and less interested. At times, his attempts to look like a psychiatrist on a struggling mission going over board. Navya Nair makes a decent performance in the available role that too doesn't have much to relish. Swetha Menon's character just doesn't have enough depth and seems to have been included to balance the tale.
All in all, this `Sadgamaya' will hardly offer any interesting viewing to much of the most dedicated viewers of Mollywood, except for its final few reels and a twist.
