‘Sardar 2’ Is Not Just a Sequel: Karthi Reveals What to Expect

Actor Karthi is gearing up for the release of Sardar 2, the much-awaited sequel to his blockbuster spy thriller Sardar. Directed by P. S. Mithran, the film is produced by S. Lakshman Kumar under the Prince Pictures banner. In Telugu, the film will be presented by Annapurna Studios and is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on September 10.

With the teaser and trailer already creating strong buzz, Karthi recently interacted with the media and opened up about the film, his dual role, the action sequences, and what audiences can expect from the sequel.

Sardar 2 Will Be Bigger and More Impactful

According to Karthi, the sequel takes the core strengths of Sardar and elevates them on a much larger scale.

“The water concept in Sardar created a strong impact. Sardar 2 will be ten times more impactful,” Karthi said, adding that the sequel explores another interesting problem within India through the perspective of a spy.

While most spy films often revolve around missions conducted outside the country, Sardar 2 focuses on how a spy deals with a major problem unfolding within India. Karthi believes this gives the film a distinct identity.

A Spy Who Lives Among Us

Karthi revealed that one of the aspects that attracted him to the Sardar franchise was its grounded portrayal of spies.

“Whenever we think of spy films, we imagine characters like Tom Cruise. But when Mithran narrated the idea of a spy wearing a lungi, I immediately connected with it,” Karthi recalled.

He explained that real-life spies often live among ordinary people without revealing their identities or the nature of their work. The franchise attempts to explore this less-seen side of espionage while also highlighting the sacrifices spies make for the country.

Karthi in a Challenging Dual Role

One of the biggest highlights of Sardar 2 is Karthi’s portrayal of both a father and son. The actor admitted that playing two characters who travel together presented a major challenge, particularly in terms of performance and makeup.

The older character also has a significant action component.

“I love action, but the challenge here was that I had to fight like an old man. He may be old, but he is extremely skilled. Since he is a spy, he has several techniques at his disposal,” Karthi said.

The actor added that he thoroughly enjoyed performing the action sequences.

Mind-Blowing Action Blocks

Karthi has promised that Sardar 2 will deliver action on a much larger scale. The film features major action blocks from beginning to end, with the flashback portions and climax expected to be among its biggest highlights.

The actor also pointed out that the film has been made with high production values and aims to establish that South Indian cinema can deliver spy thrillers on a truly international scale.

SJ Suryah as the Villain

Another major attraction is S. J. Suryah, who plays the antagonist. Karthi hinted that the character will be unlike anything audiences have seen from the actor before.

According to Karthi, Suryah himself feels that something that did not work out in his earlier film Spider has worked particularly well in Sardar 2. The actor has also dubbed for his character in his own voice.

Three Strong Female Characters

Sardar 2 also features three female leads. Karthi highlighted the roles played by Raashii Khanna and Malavika Mohanan, describing them as intelligent and different from conventional female characters in commercial cinema.

The film, he said, showcases strong women and their contribution to the fight for the country.

A Full-Scale Vande Bharat Train Set

The makers have gone all out when it comes to production design. Karthi revealed that a complete Vande Bharat train set was constructed specifically for the film.

He praised the producers for investing heavily in the project and refusing to compromise on scale or production quality.

Karthi’s Special Connection With Sardar

Karthi also recalled a memorable incident following the release of Sardar. While he was travelling for a shoot, a group of youngsters followed his car and shouted that they would not allow water-bottling plants to come up.

The incident made Karthi particularly happy because it showed him how deeply the film’s message had reached audiences, including younger viewers.

Excited About Annapurna Studios Release

Karthi expressed confidence about the Telugu release of Sardar 2 through Annapurna Studios, with whom he shares a strong association.

He also spoke warmly about Nagarjuna, saying that their relationship goes beyond cinema and that he feels even more confident when Nagarjuna is involved. Sardar was also released in Telugu through Annapurna Studios, making the sequel’s association with the banner special for Karthi.

Karthi and Suriya Together? “We Are Also Waiting”

Karthi was also asked about the possibility of sharing the screen with his brother Suriya, a collaboration fans have been eagerly anticipating.

Karthi revealed that both of them are interested in doing a film together, but they are waiting for the right story and director.

“We also want to do it. But the story and director have to come together. We are waiting for such a story,” he said.

With a bigger canvas, a challenging dual role, high-octane action, SJ Suryah’s intriguing antagonist and a story rooted in a threat within India, Sardar 2 is shaping up to be one of Karthi’s most ambitious projects yet. The film is set to hit theatres worldwide on September 10.
