Shambhu tells us the story of young Brahmin student Shambu Mahadevan who is the son of noted Tamil writer Shankari Mahadevan.

Bad fate struck as, Mahadevan passes away a few years after the marriage, leaving Shankari and their two children, Shambhu and Ranjini. Shankari, who is also a college lecturer, gets transferred to Palakkad and settles in a small rented house with her children. By that time Shambhu has grown up into a college-going youth. Shankari wants her son to be an IAS officer and Shambhu too concentrates on his studies. He has a few friends in the college where life is fast and furious.
