Veteran Tamil film producer and distributor K. Rajan (85) died by suicide on Sunday evening by jumping into the Adyar River in Chennai, an incident that has sent shockwaves throughout the film industry.
On Sunday evening, K. Rajan left in his car with his driver. Upon reaching the Thiru Vi Ka Bridge near Adyar, he asked the driver to stop the vehicle, stating he wanted to take a short walk. Unexpectedly, he suddenly jumped off the bridge into the river below.
Shocked onlookers and the driver immediately alerted the police and fire departments. Personnel from the Saidapet Fire and Rescue Services rushed to the spot and conducted an intensive search operation. K. Rajan’s body was recovered around 5:15 PM.
His body was sent to the Royapettah Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination. His son, Prabhukanth, has confirmed the tragic news. The Adyar Police have registered a case and are investigating why the 85-year-old veteran took this extreme step.

Preliminary investigations suggest he had been under significant mental stress due to family issues over the past few days. Police are also searching to see if he left behind a suicide note.
K. Rajan had been an active figure in Tamil cinema since the early 1980s.
Under his banner, ‘Ganesh Cine Arts,’ he produced several films including Brahmacharigal, Doubles, and Aval Paavam. He also directed the film Unarchigal, starring Abbas and Kunal.
He appeared as an actor in recent films such as Ajith’s Thunivu and Selvaraghavan’s Bakasuran.

Having served as the President of the Chennai Film Distributors Association, he was known for being a fearless and outspoken voice on cinema stages and in YouTube interviews.
Rajan was famous for his blunt advocacy, often stating: “Only if big actors reduce their multi-crore salaries can small producers and ordinary cinema workers survive.” He was also a staunch proponent of ensuring Tamil film titles remained in the Tamil language.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, and various film industry celebrities and workers have expressed their deep condolences. The industry mourns the loss of a “brave voice” that consistently spoke up for the welfare of small-scale producers.
