Shoot Out at Lokhandwala

Thursday, January 1, 1970 • Hindi Comments

There have been films about underworld v/s cops. There have been films about encounter killings. There have been realistic dramas about the underbelly of underworld.

Now watch out for a film that picks up it's plot from a 6 hour long battle of guns and bombs that actually happened years back on the lanes of Lokhandwala, Mumbai!

This was a gun battle that involved a group of gangsters who had holed themselves in a housing complex at Lokhandwala and were now up in arms against a horde of cops who went all out in giving back all what they received...and much more.

This group of gangsters was led by Maya Dolas [Vivek Oberoi], a 26 year old man, who had a rough persona and came from a troubled background. With hardships being the order of the day since his very childhood, he was taught one thing by his mother, fondly called Aai [Amrita Singh], to hit back when threatened. Whether his upbringing as a criminal was just due to this fact may never really be known but the fact is that he made steady progress in underworld.

He was a work alcoholic and for him the job was a job, whether it required an additional effort or resources. Completely involved in his 'job', he did have a soft corner for someone but his shy nature came in between his proposal to the girl he loved. Recognized by the big daddies of the dark world beneath, he got all their support...until one day they decided to pull it all off!

In his gang was his loyal companion Buwa [Tusshar Kapoor] who could be best described as a psycho. Fearful and dreaded, his very name spelt terror on the lanes of Mumbai. Even the cops were petrified of him and the story that makes the rounds is that when one of them got a chance to kill him, he got so nervous that Buwa had all the time in the world to bring his own service revolver and pump back bullets into him. He loved to kill and also loved a bar dancer, Tanu.

The only educated man in this gang was Fattu [Rohit Roy] who was a graduate but had chosen to be a part of this world. His initial assignment didn't quite work the way it ideally should have and hence he was nicknamed 'fattu' [someone who gets scared quite easily]. Though Fattu did commit many a murders later on with complete confidence, the name stuck to him. A follower of Buwa since he was introduced to underworld by him and a loyal gang member, somewhere deep inside his heart he despised his very sight of Maya due to difference in opinion in most of the matters.

The gang had its comic element coming in the form of Doubling [Aditya Lakhia], a man who said everything twice. Whether it was ordering food or his wife giving birth to twins - it was all double! A cheerful guy, he was a butt of joke for his friends but he never minded that. On the other hand RC [Shabbir Ahluwalia] was true to his name i.e. Royal Challenge. Reason? He was constantly drunk and this is what kept him on his feet. Because whenever he didn't have alcohol in him, his past reminded him of the unintentional crime he had committed when he had gunned down a family of three as he ran from the police.

For such a mix of gangsters, the cops which proved to be a great challenge were led by Additional Commissioner SS Khan [Sanjay Dutt]. Ruthless when it came to gunning down the terrorists from Punjab or the local goons from the streets of Mumbai, Khan believed in eradicating the criminals which would in turn wipe off all the crime. Leading Anti Terrorist Squad, he was now on one of the toughest missions of his life as he guided his team to take the battle heads on.

Khan's team comprised of Inspector Kaviraj Patil who had a dry sense of humor. As ruthless as his boss Khan, he too was heartless when it came to criminals. A player of many a battles, his behavior saw him getting transferred to multiple locatio
