Singapore PM announces lockdown for 30 days

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has on Friday announced a 1-month-long lockdown of the country. The move has become a matter of international significance because Singapore has been seen as having been ahead of the curve in tackling COVID-19.

The shutdown starts next Tuesday. The PM said that most workplaces, except for essential services and key economic sectors, shall be closed. "Non-essential businesses will be closed. Food establishments, banking etc will remain open. Stay at home as much as possible; avoid all visiting including family members not staying with you," the PM told his countrymen.

"We have enough food supplies to last us through this period, and beyond. You can still shop at the supermarket or wet market. And you need not rush to stock up for weeks at a time," he added in an attempt to pre-empt panic-buying.

Commenting on the development, an Indian journalist said, "LOCKDOWN seems the only solution. Many hailed Singapore for controlling COVID without a lockdown. Now Singapore PM announces a one-month long lockdown."
