Today is the 70th birthday of legendary singer S.P.Balasubramaniam.

Sripathi Panditharadhyula Balasubramaniam, fondly addressed as SPB by fans and as Balu by his industry colleagues including Isaignani Ilaiyaraja, this singer can be called as the god's gift to the cinema and music industries. He has recorded over 40,000 songs in various languages of films in Indian languages while his mainstay has been Tamil and mother tongue Telugu.

In a career that has completed five decades, SPB has won a huge number of awards and the long list includes six National awards. 25 Nandi awards given by Andhra Pradesh State Government and the prestigious Kalaimamani title given by Tamil Nadu Government. The Indian Government honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2011.

He holds the Guinness World Record for recording a highest number of songs on a single day. SPB used to record for multiple songs on the same day and for that he used to keep flying across states everyday during his peak period.

SPB is the one whose journey has traversed from the days of MGR and Sivaji Ganesan to the current young heroes. He has song numerous superhit songs for Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan and he still continues to sing the intro song in the Superstar's films

We can not single out a particular genre of songs in which SPB is an expert. He is impeccable in all genres while most of his fans like his melodies. Even before getting formally trained in Carnatic music,he has beautifully rendered songs based on complicated Carnatic songs. 'Sangeetha Jathi Mullai' song composed by Ilaiyaraja for the film 'Kadhal Oviyam' is the best example for SPB's mastery in singing classical numbers.

The much loved and admired singer has also rendered many individual albums. Apart from being a singer he is a multi-talented. He has been a much admired actor and a successful voice-over artist. Over the year's he has been the voice of Kamal Haasan in the Telugu version of the latter's films. He has done musical score for many films and has also produced films.

Even today at this age he remains a most sought after singer and all the songs he croons become instant super hits. Age taking a toll on his health has been visible these days in his appearance but that is not the case for his voice.
