'Singh is Bliing' V/s 'Talvar' and The October 2 deja vu

  • IndiaGlitz, [Wednesday,September 16 2015]

It seems history is repeating itself and sense of déjà vu is emerging for Vishal Bhardwaj whose 'Haider' last year was pitted against a star studded commercial potboiler Bang Bang'. 'Singh is Bling' starring Akshay Kumar is all set to compete with 'Talvar', which is a content driven film starring powerful actors like Irrfan Khan, Konkana Sen Sharma and Neeraj Kabi backed by names like Meghna Gulzar (Director) and Vishal Bharadwaj (Producer and Writer).

Its déjà vu for Vishal Bhardwaj. Talvar is a film based on the Aarushi Talwar murder case, which is probably the most controversial case in India. On the other hand, Singh Is Bling is typical commercial film starring Akshay Kumar.

Last year on October 2 a similar clash was observed Vishal Bhardwaj's 'Haider' released along with Hrithik Roshan's Bang Bang. The former went on to get critical appreciation and also shined at the box office.

This year is also crucial for Vishal as he is the producer and writer of 'Talvar'.

Leading distributor and exhibitor Rajesh Thadani says, "The two films belong to different genres and have separate audiences. Of course, 'Talvar' has an edge because Vishal Bhardwaj's name is associated with it."

Another industry observer said, "Surprisingly for the second time in a row October 2, is having a clash of content and commerce. 'Talvar' is pitted against a much bigger film Singh Is Bling, very much like the 'Haider' and 'Bang Bang' contest of last year. The appeal and the audience of these two films are completely different but increasingly good content films are scoring even at the box office now."

'Talvar may' not have a star value but it seems promising. It remains to be seen though which film wins the race in spirit. "Last year, Haider scored a moral victory over Bang Bang," opined an industry observer.

'Talvar', after doing rounds of film festivals in Toronto, London and Busan, will be releasing in India on 2nd October, 2015.
