The death of the father son duo Jeyaraj and Fenix after being taken into custody to the Sathankulam police station has become a national issue over alleged police brutality.  The duo who run a cellphone shot in Thoothukudi reportedly violated the lockdown rules though the neighbouring shopkeepers deny it and have stated that the cops attacked the elderly Jeyaraj and when his son intervened both were arrested. 

A number of celebrities including Suriya, Suchitra, Shikhar Dhawan, Harbhajan Singh and others have posted their shock on the internet.  Superstar Rajinikanth's official spokespersons have informed that the actor had personally called the wife of Jeyaraj and offered his condolences to the death of her husband and son.
