Repeated Flashbacks Make 'Sweetheart' Lose Its Charm!

Produced by composer Yuvan Shankar Raja under YSR Films, Sweetheart is directed by debutant Sweenith S. Sukumar and stars Rio Raj, Gopika Ramesh, and Arunachaleswaran in key roles.

The story follows Vasu (Rio Raj), whose bitter childhood experiences have left him disillusioned with marriage, family, and children. On the other hand, Manu (Gopika Ramesh) dreams of a future filled with love, marriage, and kids. Despite their differences, the two enter into a relationship-one that Manu embraces as love, while Vasu sees it as something casual. Their conflicting perspectives lead to misunderstandings, ultimately ending in a breakup. However, an unexpected pregnancy forces them to confront their differences and navigate the challenges that follow. What happens next forms the rest of the story.

Rio Raj appears more refined and youthful than in his previous films. His portrayal of Vasu-a detached, indifferent man who struggles to value others’ emotions-fits the character well. With a bit more polish in his expressions and performance, he could find a solid footing in romantic roles, especially given the current shortage of leading men in the genre.

Gopika Ramesh, a familiar face in the digital era, carries the entire film on her shoulders. Her innocent charm, expressive eyes brimming with emotions, and natural performance make her a perfect fit for the role. Meanwhile, Arunachaleswaran, playing the supportive friend, steals scenes much like he did in Lover, making the audience wish they had a friend like him.

While the film has its strengths, it also has noticeable flaws. The screenplay suffers from excessive non-linear storytelling, with repeated flashbacks disrupting the flow. Even mundane actions, like picking up a mobile phone, are given unnecessary backstories. A prolonged sequence set on an apartment balcony, centered around a single bottle, drags the first half down, making it feel monotonous.

The film’s core concept-a carefree hero who avoids serious relationships and a heroine determined to change him-feels like a dated formula reminiscent of Priyamana Thozhi and other old-school romances. It’s high time filmmakers move past these tropes.

Cinematographer Balaji Subramaniam delivers vibrant and visually appealing romantic and song sequences, enhancing the film’s youthful vibe. Yuvan Shankar Raja, serving as both composer and producer, works his magic with soulful songs and an engaging background score. Director Sweenith S. Sukumar not only sticks to the planned budget but also puts in commendable effort in promoting the film.

The second half attempts to lift the film with emotional moments and strong dialogues, adding some much-needed depth.

Overall, Sweetheart offers a few touching emotional scenes for those who walked in expecting a breezy romance based on its vibrant trailer. If even those moments don’t resonate, well... sorry, boss, that’s on you!
