Tamannaah Bhatia has been summoned by the Maharashtra Cyber department regarding her alleged involvement in the unauthorized streaming of the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The streaming is said to have taken place on the Fairplay app, a subsidiary of the Mahadev online gaming and betting application.

Tamannaah, known for her roles in popular films like ‘Baahubali’, is scheduled to appear before the Cyber department on April 29 as part of the ongoing investigation into the illegal broadcasting of IPL matches via the Fairplay app.

Earlier, rapper and singer Badshah was questioned in connection with the same case, and actor Sanjay Dutt was also summoned this week, although Dutt has reportedly requested additional time before appearing before the department.Tamannaah and Sanjay are alleged to have promoted and endorsed FairPlay’s subsidiary app of the Mahadev betting app. It is reported that more than 20 influencers who had endorsed the FairPlay app on various platforms may also be summoned soon to record their statements.

The controversy arose when it was found that various celebrities had promoted the Fairplay app for streaming IPL matches, despite the app lacking official broadcasting rights. This promotion allegedly led to significant losses for the official IPL broadcasters.

Last September, an FIR was registered following a complaint by Viacom18, which holds the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) for streaming IPL matches. Viacom18 alleged losses exceeding Rs 100 crore due to the illegal streaming on Fairplay.

As a result of the FIR, several stars, including rapper and singer Badshah, actor Sanjay Dutt, and actress Jacqueline Fernandez, among others, were called in for questioning by the authorities. Additionally, in December 2023, an employee of the betting app was arrested in connection with the case.

The case highlights the serious consequences of illegal streaming and the potential legal ramifications for individuals involved in promoting such activities. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen how Tamannaah's involvement will unfold and what repercussions she might face.
