Close to 300 Tamil Nadu artistes have come in support of director Pa Ranjith for his speech on King Raja Raja Chozhan. The artistes are united under Coalition for Artist's Right to Speech and have condemned Ranjith being threatened to be killed and also threatening to make him face police action for putting out his views.

They have started an online petition addressing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami requesting him not to impose legal action on Ranjith. The director's speech on June 5 created huge controversy following which a case was filed and he received an anticipatory bail from the Madras High Court.

It was during the death anniversary of Umar Farooq, founder of Blue Panthers Party in Kumbakonam, that Ranjith spoke on discrimination not being spoken when people speak of Tamil pride and that different caste groups wanted to claim Raja Raja Chozhan as their own but called his period as the dark period for Dalits. After this a case was filed under IPC 153,153 (A) (1) (a) against the director.
