The nation recently saw students across several states demanding the postponement of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) scheduled to be held in September over the coronavirus pandemic situation. However, the Supreme Court recently dismissed a petition seeking postponement of the exams.

Upset and distressed over the news, a 19-year-old girl from Coimbatore took her own life over fear of writing the paper. The deceased girl, identified as R Subhshri, was reportedly the daughter of an ITI staff from Venkatasamy Road (East) in RS Puram. She had been preparing for the medical entrance test for the past two years and appeared once in 2019 but did not qualify for the admission as she did not get the minimum cut-off mark required. In order to secure herself a seat this year, she apparently attended coaching classes throughout 2019 until the lockdown situation. According to reports, the teenager locked herself inside her bedroom at approximately 11 am on Tuesday. When she did not come out of her room even after four hours and did not respond when her parents knocked on the door, the family members broke open the door to find her hanging from the ceiling of the room.

The body of the 19-year-old girl has been recovered by the RS Puram police and sent to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. A case has reportedly been registered under section 174 (police to enquire and report on suicide) of the Indian Penal Code and the matter is being investigated. The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (UG) has been scheduled to be conducted on September 13.
