TN government shuts down Koyambedu market announces TASMAC opening

The Koyambedu vegetable market the largest in Asia has been one of the epicenters for the spread of the deadly coronavirus in Chennai and rest of Tamil Nadu as more than 500 people have tested positive and efforts are on to test around 10000 more associated with it.

The TN government has decided to temporarily shut down the Koyambedu market and set up a new one in the satellite township of Thirumazhisai amidst protests from the vendors and others. Meanwhile out of the blue came the announcement that the state owned TASMAC liquor shops will be opened from May 7th the same day the Thirumizhisai market will start functioning.

In a statement the government has clarified that the central government has allowed liquor shops and the neighboring states of Telangana and Karnataka have already opened up to huge cheers from consumers. To avoid people swarming to the neighboring states for their drinks the government has said that it would open shops in the next couple of days.

Even as netizens are screaming that it could see another huge spike if drinkers storm the liquor shops throwing caution to the winds, the statements points out that the shops will not be opened in containment zones. If it is any consolation the statement further asserts that strict social distancing and sanitisation measures will be adopted which is easier said than done considering that liquor starved addicts will be making a beeline for it.
