That's why actresses don't complain about sexual abuse

Women are coming out with their stories of sexual harassment by actors/directors/producers. And it's often said by critics/trolls that they should have come out in the open years ago when the incident happened. 'Why did they wait for so long to speak out?' is the question of critics.

The answer is found in what Malayalam actress Parvathy says. She and a few women are part of the Women in Cinema Collective, a forum that fights for the safety of women in the film industry (Mollywood). Ever since she became vocal about the lack of safety for women, offers have slowed down. She has spoken out against her industry elders for not preventing Dileep (accused as the one who conspired the assault on an actress) from doing movies. So, not many want to work with her.

When a bonafide actor like Parvathy says offers have dried up since she has been a part of the WCC, it is a stark reflection of the kind of cinema culture in our country. And still, we continue to ask women why they keep their silence about harassment, writes Avinash Ramachandran, a journalist.

Recently, Chinmayi Sripada too suggested that her career might come to an end because she is exposing the Kollywood poet-lyricist Varaimuthu.
