The biggest spectacle and surprise for Telugu Cinema - JVAS!

JVAS - Short for Jagadeeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari, became a cult classic for Telugu Cinema because of the kind of the novelty story and treatment it offered in a regular commercial Telugu Cinema. The father of Telugu Commercial Cinema - K. Raghavendra Rao after few flops, helmed this one with Megastar Chiranjeevi, his all-time favourite heroine - Sridevi for Ch. Ashwini Dutt on a large scale. Normally, after flops directors tend to go for safe stories but KRR and Ashwini Dutt went for a very expensive film for that time -1990.

They wanted to give a spectacle to Telugu Cinema like old Vijaya Productions films and hence, they made a plan to make a film that involves all sorts of mysterious and mythological elements blended into a regular commercial film format. They hired Yendamoori Veerendranath who was back then the go-to writer for such weird themes and also highly successful. Along with him, Crazy Mohan came on board and Jandhyala took the dialogue version of the film to next level.

Another 4 writers worked on the script to make the film, what it is. The team wanted an emotional core that keeps the plot grounded even though mystical being coming to earth is like an Indian-ized version of E.T. As it was a craze back in the time, they brought the kids angle and the comic scenes were majorly written by Crazy Mohan in the film.

By the time, the movie was announced, Shiva became a sensation and every person in Telugu and Southern Industry wanted to make a film like Ram Gopal Varma. The challenge for Raghavendra Rao was to bring audiences who were amazed by RGV's work to come back to his style and adjust as it was considered downgrading from what RGV achieved. But KRR did not see it that way.

He saw the movie as a novel and let the lighting by cameramen to present each scene like a mystery. This made audiences forget that they were watching just any other film like how Baahubali makers did in 2015. The level of technical expertise on this film was unprecedented in Telugu Cinema by that time as well. Like how Bapu tried to make every frame a painting in his mythological films, Raghavendra Rao too strove hard to realise the dream like setting on camera. Hence, even though movie released during a cyclone that too at the peak summer time, movie became an All-Time Blockbuster.

More than that, movie became a phenomenon that never refuses to die. If you see a lady anchor still trying pass off wearing wings like Sridevi on TV or if you see an actress in any cinema talking in a cute and bubbly tone, then realise that the impact created by JVAS is still alive! Here's to the team for another 30 years and more.
