Today at this digital age social media is the battle ground where fans of the current superstars Rajini-Kamal, Vijay-Ajith, Dhanush-Simbu and Sivakarthikeyan-Vijay Sethupathi fight it in the battle for supremacy.  However this dual domination first started among the first megastars of Tamil cinema M.K. Thiagaraja Bhagavathar and P.U. Chinappa.

Both MKT and PUC were singer actors who carved a niche for themselves in the minds of the audicences. Both had a theater background which helped them gain a foot hold at the advent of the new medium cinema.   Legend has it that fans of both the superstars would clash during the release of their films.  During the late 1930s to mid 1950s MKT made such memorable films as 'Pavalakodi', 'Haridas' and 'Amarakavi' among others.   PUC on the other hand enjoyed succes with 'Uttama Puthiran', 'Aryamala', 'Kannagi' and 'Harichandra' among others.

Destiny had it that both of them lost their superstardom suddenly, Chinappa died at an young age while Bhagavathar suffered heavily after his going to prison in the Lakshmikanthan murder case.  However these two legends are remembered to this day for their contribution to early Tamil cinema and ushering in the superstar era.
