The Warriorr Review

The Warriorr - Ram Pothineni shines in Linguswamy's commercial masala flick

Director Linguswamy known for his commercial potboilers with a heart namely 'Run', 'Sandakozhi', 'Paiyaa' and 'Vettai' has joined hands with young Telugu star Ram Pothineni for this Telugu/Tamil bilingual.  Whether the film will satisfy its target audiences (read masala lovers) remains to be seen.

Satya (Ram Pothineni) who has just completed his MBBS is posted in Madurai and goes there with his mother (Nadiya) to join as a house surgeon in a hospital.  Whistle Mahalakshmi (Kriti Shetty) a radio jockey is their bubbly neighbour destined to fall for the hero.  Guru (Aadi Pinisetty) is a dreaded gangster who rules Madurai underworld and when his men attack a man with knives and leave him for dead, Satya rushes him to the hospital and saves his life.  When the henchmen kill his patient Satya is angered that a life he saved has been lost and lodges a complaint against the gangsters.  Guru attacks Satya and beats him within inches of his death and leaves suspended in a public place for others to see what fate awaits those who cross his path.  After the same Satya returns as a fiery cop and what happens next is what 'The Warriorr is all about.

Ram Pothineni, already an established star in Telugu makes his Tamil debut and impresses right away as an allrounder who fights,dances and emotes well and is also a charming looker.  His variations while playing the doctor and the cop are subtle and effective.  With his near perfect Tamil dialogue delivery he can easily carry a Kollywood movie on his own.  A welcome find indeed.  Kriti Shetty who already has a fanbase in Tamil Nadu has made her debut and is a bundle of energy both in the love portions and the couple of colorful songs with the hero.  Aadi Pinisetty as the villain Guru is menacing with a queer character trait of planting a tree whenever he kills while Nadiya plays the mother with her usual charm.  Redin Kingsley in a fleeting appearance provides the solitary comedy moment.

What works in 'The Warriorr' is the first half that sets up the straightforward doctor at loggerheads with a much powerful foe.  The romance scenes between Kriti and Ram are breezy in true Linguswamy style.  The interval twist that turns the hero from a doctor to a cop also amps up the curiosity.  The stunt choreography is in tune with the pure commercial route that the film has taken.

On the flip side apart from the novelty regarding the doctor turning into a cop there is nothing new in the story.  The screenplay seems dated and never really goes anywhere.  The length is also too much considering what is on offer.

DSP's songs "Bullet" and "Whistle" are already chartbusters while the background music is a plus much like the cinematography of Sujeeth Vasudev Producer Srinivasa Chitturi in Telugu and Mastermind in Tamil have bankrolled the film with high production values.  Director Lingusamy has chosen to make 'The Warriorr' a pure commercial entertainer and succeeds to a certain extent with the core he has chosen.  However his fans expect much more from him.

Verdict: Go for this one if you fancy a colorful commercial entertainer with a Lingusamy touch.
