Theatres get a green signal, can be opened from Oct 15

The Centre on Wednesday ssued guidelines for the phased re-opening of cinemas/theatres/multiplexes. Along with swimming pools used for training of sportspersons and entertainment parks, they can be opened from October 15.

Cinemas will be permitted to open with up to 50% of their seating capacity. Very soon, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry will issue guidelines.

The film industry must be somewhat relieved now. Theatres are going to reopen just in time for Dasara and Diwali. Although no big-ticket films will release for these festivals, the beleaguered exhibition sector might hope to make a fresh start.

On the flip side, it has to be seen whether the 50% limit is too low for theatres to find it feasible. Depending on public discipline and evidence, the government is expected to increase the limit gradually and scientifically.
