Atal Bihari Vajpayee

The former Prime Minister of India breathed his last due to prolonged illness a day after Independence Day. The nation mourned the demise of the Bharat Ratna, who was given a respectful farewell by the party he served for decades.

M Karunanidhi

The former Tamil Nadu CM and DMK leader died at 95, leaving millions of followers in a state of shock. A controversy arose over the TN government denying him a place for cremation at Marina Beach in Chennai. A High Court of Madras intervention eventually solved the problem.

Kofi Annan

The former UN Secretary-General and recipient of Nobel Peace Price died at the age of 80. He was known for a number of peace initiatives during his stint at the UN.

Somnath Chatterjee

The former Lok Sabha Speaker and ousted CPM leader passed away in this month. He was a favourite Communist leader of even many anti-CPM politicos. He was ousted from his party in 2008 for standing with the UPA government over the Indo-US nuclear deal. His party, for which he toiled for decades, never reinducted him.

VS Naipaul

The legendary English-language novelist and author died days after Vajpayee, whom he sympathized with, had passed away. The controversial author was known for radical views on certain religions. Described as a "writer's writer", many love his language across the world.

Kuldip Nayar

The prominent journalist-turned-editor and purveyor of peace between India and Pakistan died due to old age. Not just media personalities but also politicians ranging from Narendra Modi to Pawan Kalyan paid rich tributes to him.

Nandamuri Harikrishna

The former Parliamentarian, Minister and actor died in a road accident on August 29. Condolences poured in from Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and celebs across the Telugu and Tamil industries.
