'Mullum Malarum' is one of the two evergreen classics directed by J. Mahendran. The film released on 15 August 1978 is Mahendran's debut as a director. Decades later, when the Superstar was asked which is his most favourite film among those he has acted in. 'Mullum Malarum; was his instant reply.

The less known fact about this film is that the film would not have released without Kamal Haasan. Yes at that time Rajinikanth was a budding star while Kamal Haasan had established himself as a leading hero in South Indian cinema. The producer of the film ran short of funds and hence he decided to release the film without shooting the classic 'Senthazham poovil' song and an important sequence in the film.

Mahendran discussed about this to the Ulaganayagan who sponsored the shoot of that song and the sequence. Mahendran revealed this in an interview, he gave years later.

If not for Kamal's penchant for good cinema. We would have, we would have missed Rajini's most favorite film of his.
