Throwback Thursday - Tamil cinema's greatest Character artiste V. K. Ramaswamy

Tamil cinema has produced many talented entertainers and one person who will always have a special place in the hearts of fans and history is V.K. Ramaswamy a name synonymous to versatility.  Proof of his talent came in his very first film 'Naam Iruvar' which also was the first film of AVM Productions, in which aged 21 he succesfully carried of the role of a 60 year old man and the rest was history.

During his celebrated career, VKR as he was popularly known acted with several generation of superstars in the MGR-Sivaji, Jaishankar-Muthuraman, Rajini-Kamal and Vijay-Ajith eras.  He also worked with all the top directors of Tamil cinema with later day greats like Mani Ratnam, Fazil ,Priyadarshan and Parthiban giving him meaty roles at the fag end of his career in films like 'Anjali', 'Arangettra Velai', 'Gopura Vasalile' and 'Purthiya Paathai' respectively.  His unique voice modulation when delivering dialogues became his signature and he was equally adept in comedy, character and villainic roles taking to each like a fish to water.

VKR ruled as the premier character artiste for a staggering 55 years which ended with the Mani Ratnam produced Madhavan-Jyothika starrer 'Dum Dum Dum' directed by Azhagam Perumal.  The legend passed away in 2002 but was one performer is in the category "They dont make them anymore like that"
