Uma Bharti says Nehru sought RSS’ help soon after Independence

Union Minister of Drinking Water & Sanitation Uma Bharti has stated that India’s first prime-minister Jawaharlal Nehru sought the help of RSS cadres again possible Pakistan’s attack soon after the country gained Independence.

Uma Bharti’s claim comes at a time when a controversy is raging over RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's reported remarks on the (preparedness of) Army. Speaking to reporters in Bhopal, the former Uttar Pradesh chief-minister evaded a question to comment on Bhagwat's remarks.

Joining the issue about the integrity and discipline of RSS cadres, she recalled that soon after Independence, the ruler of the princely state of Kashmir Maharaja Hari Singh, was reluctant to sign the accession treaty of Jammu and Kashmir though Sheikh Abdullah was pressing him to sign. The then PM was in a dilemma on the issue when Pakistan suddenly moved its soldiers to Udahmpur and attacked us.

“As the Army didn’t have hi-tech facility to reach the place of attack immediately, the then prime-minister wrote to the then RSS chief Guru Golwalkar seeking help of RSS cadres who rushed to the spot responding to the call,” Uma Bharti said, asserting indirectly the integrity and preparedness of RSS cadres.
