When the name Premgi Amaren is uttered, the first thing that comes to many of our minds may be that he is a comedian. But what if he has another side? Are we open to accept the people we see in one role take up another one?

I refer here to Premgi's music. Before we reach any premature judgements, why don't we take a brief look at his work in the area of music? Let’s start with the series Planet Galatta. Premgi has composed the songs 'Nalla Sarakku' and 'Engeyo Izhukuthayya.' Forget the videos, just listen to the music.

The first one is definitely catchy, no less than any other kuthu song that released in its time more than 10 years ago. The latter also impresses with the melody and is a delight to hear even the first time. The chorus will get you tapping your feet to the rhythm.

Skip to ‘Athu Oru Kaalam’ from ‘Adhe Neram Idhe Neram.’ This song which has almost 5 million views on Youtube, portrays a typical hero’s heartache, but there is not much fault which can be found with the music which fits the mood perfectly. Or take Premgi’s background score in ‘Chennai 600028’. With a beautiful violin rendition, this tune is sure to find a place in your heart. The way the music just flows is a feast to the ear.

Premgi's latest retro dance song from 'Party' titled 'Kodi Mangani' is just the perfect nostalgic number which will take us to the 1980s reminding us of the prime of Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan. Instead of opting for a remix or making use of older songs from the time, Premgi has composed a song for Sathyaraj that will be the perfect treat for SPB Chitra fans. In a generation where even noise can sell with the right marketing, it’s sad to see that a composer who creates good music is being trolled because he has been slotted into another role.

‘Kasada Thapara’ is an upcoming film directed by Chimbu Devan, which has 6 music composers, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Ghibran, Sean Roldan, Sam CS, Santosh Narayanan and Premgi. Recently a poll conducted by India Glitz about who composed the motion poster theme music for the movie received an overwhelming majority of 78% for Yuvan Shankar Raja. The director of the film has now revealed that the melodious theme has been crafted by none other than Premgi. Hope this will prove the actor’s capabilities as a composer. At least with his upcoming projects, one hopes that he will not be judged by his previous image but by the actual quality of music he composes.
