India elected as non permanent member of UN security council!

India has been elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for a two-year term. India won a total of 184 votes in the 193-member General Assembly.

Besides India the other countries which have now got a victory in the UN security council elections held on Wednesday include Ireland, Mexico and Norway. It was for the 2021-22 term that India was a candidate for a non-permanent seat from the Asia-Pacific category.

The country's candidature was endorsed by the 55-member Asia-Pacific grouping, including China and Pakistan, in June 2019. Prior to this India was elected as a non-permanent member of the Council in the years 1950-1951, 1967-1968, 1972-1973, 1977-1978, 1984-1985, 1991-1992 and 2011-2012.
