Urumeen Review

 

Fantasy, thriller and Revenge; they sum up as a yummy ingredient for a colorful commercial flick. Urumeen has all the above mentioned elements, a national award star Bobby Simha and the talented Kalaiarasan too with a powerful role. Directed by debuntant Sakthivel Perumalsamy, the film spans between three generations and finally settles in on one of them with tit for tat as its play.

 

The story is straightforward, a hardcore revenge action movie which takes time but serves the purpose, oh yes after three generations. Bobby Simha and Kalairasan are two good friends having a good time, but as it turns out Kalairasan cheats Bobby Simha. And again after that the next life is no good for Bobby simha either and Kalaiarasan outwits his friend yet again. So it turns out our hero had enough and two generations later the truth dawns upon him and its cold blooded revenge all the way.

 

Fantasy films always look for some solid screenplay that takes the viewers on the edge of the seat experience, Urumeen has its share of moments with the second generation making the best out of whats deployed. In the first, the director takes us back to the Kings and Queen days where betrayal is more than just a sin, then he jumps into the present where Bobby is a corporate employee. Bobby Simha breathes fire when it comes to revenge, action and shows the raw grit necessary for a solo hero to make strides in the commercial arena of Kollywood. He steals the show in the scenes involving current generation, but Kalairasan easily fits his role as the antagonist in the first two, putting out a respectable performance.

 

The director has done a fab job in differentiating the periods, and who better than a good cinematographer can assist with the visuals bringing the difference. Ravindhranath Guru has worked his gut out behind the lens bringing the rightful shade in each and every dimension.

 

Performance wise both the lead actors fit their part perfectly, Kalaiarasan after a touching role in Madras has something to brag about even though the villainous roles he portray bring shades of many reputed villains in kwood, still worth the praise. Bobby Simha shows that he can fit in to any role the director wants, a goonda or a hero with raw exposure. Reshmi Menon looks cute and impressive, but has hardly a solid role to hold on to, but does justice whenever she is on screen. The rest of the actors; Manobala, Charlie and others just appear namesake.

 

The action roles are done neatly with Simha walking in grace and style. Cinematography, editing from Sam, the VFX from real media, few BGMs stuck well to the plot and screenplay. Even though the movie jumps between different sequences, a little crispness in the screenplay could have brought down the run time, the director just stretches the movie too long, with the 2nd half just too lengthy. The director could have also given better connection to justify the acts, and the violence quotient too goes a little overboard.

 

A supposed to be straighforward film gets around a lot of chaos with the twists, jumps between periods and falls behind on the execution to a fair extent. All said the movie is a good attempt from the first time director and continues to encourage the innovation platform in Kollywood.
