Thalapathy Vijay's 'Mersal' has taken a record breaking opening in Chennai city Box office. The film which released on October 18, 2017 for the Deepavali festival has collected more than a whopping six crores within six days in Chennai itself.

In the weekend between October 20 to 22, 'Mersal' has collected more than rupees three crores and 84 lakhs. (Rs.3,84,11,609). This has come from 689 shows across 18 screens with 98% occupancy on an average.

The total collection since the release day has crossed rupees six crores and 83 lakh (Rs.6,83,68,108). Trade calls it a Tremendous opening and 'Mersal' is all set to create new Box office records in Chennai as well as other places.

It must be noted that 'Mersal' has achieved this feat with lesser number of theaters. The multiplexes Inox and PVR are on a strike against the Tamil Nadu Government's 'Entertainment tax apart from GST, and they did not release 'Mersal' or any other new films. Had these theaters screened the film, the collections of 'Mersal' would have been much bigger.
