A woman attempted suicide along with her two minor daughters by jumping in front of a train at the New Jalpaiguri railway station in West Bengal's Kolkata.

All three of them have sustained severe injuries and were taken to a hospital where the mother is in a critical condition. Her four-year-old daughter's leg had to be amputated while one arm and one leg of her two-year-old daughter had to be amputated. The mother reportedly remains in an unconscious, critical condition. The woman's husband was a teacher at a government school. He was taken to the Siliguri District hospital after he showed symptoms of the novel coronavirus, where he tested positive on July 3. He reportedly had a heart condition and difficulty breathing, due to which he remained on life support. "His swab sample was collected on Friday and the report came on Monday. By then he was already on ventilation. The doctors said he cannot be shifted to a dedicated Covid hospital in that condition," the headmaster of his school reportedly said. He passed away on Tuesday morning and the same was informed to the woman, who rushed out of the house along with her two children to the station despite being stopped by the locals.

The police are now investigating to find out whether the woman decided to end her life because of her husband's death or due to the economic setback.
