Why there are no women music directors in Kollywood?

Apart from being a singer or actress, there isn't much role to play for a woman in the tinsel town. Well, arguably, once in a blue moon, we've seen some woman being a director/writer/lyricist/assistant directors. But they all have vanished in quick time. This applies more or less to across all the cine industry in India. Here's a look back at some of the famous women who scripted a name for themselves as a music director in Tamil cinema.

Bhanumathy - The first woman music director ever in Tamil cinema & juggled various roles, acting, singing, direction & production with ease. She composed music for 'Chakrapani' & 'Ippadiyum oru Pen' and she quit composing for unknown reasons.

Bhavatharini - Being the daughter of Maestro Ilayaraja, Bhavatharini showed some promise with her composing duties and bagged a National award very early in her career. 'Mitru My Friend' earned lots of accolades and she could not make it big from there on. 'Amirtham' stands as her solo Tamil OST till now.

Raihana - The sister of Rahman has delivered music for 'Machi' and tried her best to stabilize herself as a composer for a while and nothing clicked so far, but she is still going strong as a playback singer.

Shruti Hassan - Daughter of Ulaganaayagan Kamalahassan promised so much with 'Unnaippol Oruvan' and owned a rock band as well. Shruti's alluring beauty opened many ventures in terms of acting and the '7 aum Arivu' actress is very busy with high profile movies & renders her magical voice often to keep herself intact with the musical world.

Apart from these people there are few others who did their best to crack the code but never sustained for more than a movie or two. Hopefully, like in other professions, we can expect a major contribution from women's in music composition too.
