Will SC pronounce Cauvery verdict tomorrow?

Sources in the national capital point out that the long-delayed and much-awaited verdict of the Supreme Court in the dispute regarding sharing of Cauvery river water may be out tomorrow.

It may be recalled that the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal had passed its final order way back in 2007 directing Karnataka to release 192 TMC water on annual basis. The final verdict was obviously not acceptable to Karnataka whereas Tamil Nadu too filed a review of the verdict stating that the State required. 10 TMC more water.

On its part, Karnataka told the Supreme Court that it didn’t have enough water in its water-bodies and requested the apex Court to reduce the quantum of water to be given to Tamil Nadu to 132 TMC so that it can utilize the remaining 60 TMC water for its own use. Separate review petitions were filed by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Kerala.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra took up the case and conducted the trial. As Justice Amitwa Roy, one of the Judges of the Bench, is retiring on 23rd February, it is expected that the top Court might soon pronounce a verdict.
