Pachai Kili Muthucharam is expected to underline yet again Gautham Menon’s talent for a gritty and an urban thriller.

The movie is an adaptation of Derailed.

Ask Gautham Menon about it, and he quickly retorts that the adaptation is only of the book and not the movie of the same name.

There is a tale behind how Gautham came to film this story. The Derailed book was given to him by Anurag Kashyap (whose Black Friday incidentally released this week).

Gautham was immediately thrilled at the story and wanted to get the film rights. And as any self-respecting and serious filmmaker would do, Gautham contacted the publishers, but was told that the rights had been sold to Hollywood.

Gautham was in a fix.

He initially thought that he would do the movie before Hollywood can do it.

He went to Sarath, who was waiting for a script that would help him break the cliched action-mass hero mould.

Gautham is also confident that his adaptation of Derailed would have a very contemporary Tamil feel.

Gautham has told in an interview that Pachai Kili Muthucharam is a Balu Mahendra-meets-Quentin Tarantino kind of film.

Among other things, ‘Vilai Uyirendraalum,’ ‘Parundhu’ and ‘Silandhi’ were the titles considered for the movie.

Further, actors like Shobana and Simran were considered for the character that Andrea has played.
