The tax for Films have been fixed at the maximum slab of 28% in the new GST regime which will come into effect from July 1 ,2017. 28% is the tax rate of all films made in India. This is being vociferously opposed by many in the regional film industries especially the Tamil film industry. Veteran actor Kamal Haasan had said he will have to quit films if the tax rate for regional films is not reduced to 12-18%.

Now the GST Council which met on Sunday had reduced the tax rate for 66 goods and services based on representations received from those business industries and people. The council has reduced the Tax rate from 28% to 18% for film tickets up to Rs.100.

This is a partial relief to Tamil film industry are many theaters in B and C centers will come within the Rs.100 ticket slab. The multiplexes charge the maximum of Rs.120 per ticket. However Kollywood has been campaigning for a raise in the movie ticket rates that were fixed by the Tamil Nadu Government in 2007.
