What happens when a simpleton from a remote town with good cooking skills finds himself as a chef in the the ultra-modern city of London? He is rechristened as Ramji Londonwale.
Lay out a red carpet for the superstar from South India - R. Madhavan - who makes a comeback to Bollywood after delightful performances in Rehnna Hai Terre Dil Mein and Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar. Lady opposite him is Samita Bangargi who was seen in Yeh Kya Ho Rha Hai and Shaadi Ka Laddu earlier. Directed by debutant Sanjay Dayma, who wrote the screenplay for Lagaan and was also the chief assistant director of Ashutosh Gowarikar, Ramji Londonwale produced by Sunanda Murali Manohar promises to be a 'delicious comedy' about to hit the screens soon.
Ramji is a simple villager from Bihar who possesses only one talent to boast of - cooking ! Though he is illiterate and most of his acts turn out to be unintentionally comical, he is still able to stay afloat due to his good hearted nature and easy conduct.
Since he needs to arrange for dowry for his sister, he dashes off to London as he is promised a job there through one of his contacts. But on reaching London, to his horror he finds that there is no job for him. Worst case scenario comes in the shape of him loosing everything he carried with him, including his passport and visa [or beesa, as he calls it]!
Jobless and wandering on the streets, he saves a retarded Indian child from an accident and is offered a job as a chef by the child's parents. The world couldn't have been a better place for Ramji to live but then with every bit of happiness, there also comes a mountain of trouble.
The trouble here is in the form of London police and immigration officials who want to nab him as he doesn't carry any official papers with him [read passport and visa]. On a run from the officials, he is suggested a solution by a NRI lawyer [Raj Zutshi].
The solution sounds pretty simple - he can save himself by marrying lawyer's own fiancee Sameera [Samita Bangragi] in a fake ceremony, so that he could get a British citizenship. And once the storm settles down, they both were free to leave each other.
Though the idea had its own complications inspite of sounding so simple, Ramji didn't have any other options. Meanwhile Sameera too bows down to the wishes of his fiancee and agrees to the arrangement. Both Ramji and Sameera do get married but the trouble is not yet over. Because the police and immigration officers are now suspicious about the authenticity of the marriage!!
To make matters worse, Ramji comes across another woman who claims to be the lawyer's ex-girlfriend and narrates her sob story about going through a similar fate when she was deserted after being married to the lawyer in the greed of getting British citizenship.
What happens next forms a hilarious culmination to the story where all the characters in the movie run amok in the hilarious situations that follow.
A delightful comedy, the original source for the movie - Nala Damayanthi - was a good success when released 2 years back in Tamil. Madhavan had starred in the original version too and had won accolades for his performance. One expects that he should be even more popular in Bollywood after the release of 'Ramji Londonwale' as here he plays the role of a Bihari. More so because he himself hails from Jamshedpur in Bihar and is quite familiar with the culture and language of the state. Another factor that works in the favor of the movie is Kamal Hassan's name as a story writer. Supporting cast of the movie comprises of Satish Shah, Harsh Chayya, Aditya Lakhiya and Akhilendra Mishra while the music is given by Vishal Bhardwaj.
