A status report submitted by Vellore prison authorities on Tuesday said filmmaker and Naam Thamizhar Iyakkam chief Seeman, who was arrested and remanded to judicial custody for his alleged inflammatory speech, had been granted ‘A’ class facility.

Seeman had filed a habeas corpus petition in the Madras High Court, stating that he had been put up in a block with was not in use for two decades. He claimed that authorities had not given him ‘A’ class facilities despite an order from the Magistrate.

When the matter came up before a Division Bench comprising Justices C Nagappan and P R Shivakumar on Tuesday, the Superintendent of the Central Prison, Vellore, submitted the status report that Seeman has been granted ‘A' class facility in the prison.

He had been lodged in the yard with attached toilet facilities. He was being provided with a cot, a bed, a chair and a table, daily newspapers and food as per ‘A' class rules, the report said. Seeman was lodged in prison after he was arrested and remanded to judicial custody on July 12 for his alleged inflammatory speech at a protest meeting in Chennai on July 10.
