Controversies and S J Suryah have become inseparable. The actor witnessed legal battle for alleged obscenity in his films. He was arrested for assaulting Censor Board chairman. Several men jumped in protest seeking to change the title of his film alleging that it was obscene. Adding one more to his troubles is a sessions court order in Chennai urging the actor to appear before the court on 7 April in connection with a case filed against him by the Regional Censor Board.

The Censor Board had filed a case against him for using few stills in the promotional campaign for his film New, that were not permitted by the Censor Board. According to rules, such deleted scenes should not be used for promos, trailers or posters. S J Suryah had defied the orders. A complaint with the Mambalam police station had been filed. The case came up for hearing at the Saidapet Court and Suryah did not appear and his lawyer claimed that he was busy with shooting.

However the Judge ordered Suryah to be present for the hearing on 17 April without fail or face a non-bailable warrant against his name.
