Theatre owners in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday announced their decision to not screen 'Dam 999', saying it was against the interests of the state. Political parties like DMK, PMK and MDMK had demanded a ban on the movie.
The decision came as the film generated considerable heat and debate, with leaders in Tamil Nadu contending that it was based on the Mullaperiyar dam, over which Tamil Nadu and Kerala have a long standing dispute.

According to Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners' Association general secretary R Panneerselvam, "The film justifies breaking of the (Mullaperiyar) dam. It is against interests of Tamil Nadu. We have decided not to screen the film to express our concerns."
In a statement on Wednesday, DMK president M Karunanidhi made a plea for banning the film ÂDam-999', saying its release would disrupt the peaceful co-existence of Tamils and Malayalees in Tamil Nadu and Kerala and lead to law and order problems.
