While it had garnered a remarkable response from international festival, Aamir Khan’s ‘Dhobi Ghat’ attracted wrath from certain section of society down home. Reason being is its title which carries the word ‘Dhobi’.

According to Hindustan Kanojia Organisation of Dhobis chairman Vinod Kumar Kanojia, the title seems to pose as a caste dividing factor in the society. Basing this Kanojia has approached Delhi high court, demanding a change of title before its release early next year.

In the film, Prateik Babbar is plays a dhobi while Aamir features as a painter.

In his petition Kanojia stated, “The film could have been given some other name. It has been given the name to hurt the feelings of the community, which is highly condemned.” He further added, “The community has been notified as scheduled caste in the Constitution and calling any person by its name is a punishable offence. The film’s title is violating fundamental rights of the community and it must be restrained by the court.”

‘Dhobi Ghat’ is the directorial debut of Aamir’s wife Kiran Rao.
