When dashing and handsome Navin Nischol sung this song praising the beauty of actress Rekha in her debut movie SAWAN BHADON (1970) eyebrows were raised at her unconventional looks and critics wrote her off using offensive adjectives. But her dynamic transition from an ugly duckling to a beautiful swan, not just tight lipped her hardened critics but Rekha has been a motivation for many.
Today Rekha, the ageless Diva turns 60; Raaga.Com wishes her birthday greetings and pray she holds her sway for generations to come.
On her birthday the best compliment that has greeted her comes from her co - star Shreya in SUPER NAANI, who said, "Rekhaji is beauty personified, in mind, body and soul. Even at 60, she retains her charm and beauty. Like the (monument) Taj Mahal, she will never grow old."
Readers would be surprised to know that when Rekha received criticism she did not take it in wrong spirit, instead she took it positively and worked on her physique and the result were soon evident.
Recalling one of her criticism that she heard from her actor Shashi Kapoor at the premiere of her debut film SAWAN BHADON, Rekha said, "I still remember how excited I was to attend the premiere of my first film. Hence I wore a gaudily sequined dress which was black-and-turquoise-blue gharara with loads of ringlets and a large bouffant with stiff kiss curls and false eyelashes too! However Shashi Kapoor, who had attended the premiere with his sexy firangi` (Foreigner) wife, jennifer Kendal, made a harsh remark, "How can this kaali, moti actress going to make it in Bollywood?" (How come this black and fat actress succeed in Bollywood)."
She added, "The remark came as bolt from blue but the saving grace was that Shashi Kapoor`s wife saw fire in me. Hence she retorted, No dear. She has some namak, she will be here for many years to come.` It was jennifer Kendal`s motivational words that gave me strength to fight my drawbacks and with dedication and patients I proved my critics wrong."
