In case you had assumed that the Boxing Day Test had anything to do with boxing, you're wrong. Just like a million other people.

The day after Christmas is termed as the Boxing Day in the United Kingdom and other British Commonwealth countries such as Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Hence, any Test match that is played on December 26 is supposedly a Boxing Day Test. Since Australia hosts a Test series every year on December 26, the name of the current Test series came to be.

According to a popular theory, servants/employees are usually handed “Christmas Boxes” by their employers/bosses on December 26, as a token of appreciation for working on the day of Christmas. The boxes usually contain gifts and food items. It has been believed that this tradition gave birth to the term “Boxing Day.”

The first day of the third Test against Australia on 215/2 at Melbourne, on Wednesday, came to a conclusion with Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara at the crease . The record-highest partnership of the four-match Test series between Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara came after an impressive show by debutant Mayank Agarwal.
