The Central Bureau of Investigation registered an FIR against the Tamil Nadu Police and revenue officials on Wednesday in the Tuticorin firing case during the Anti-Sterlite protests. On May 22, local residents protested against the Sterlite copper smelter, which resulted in the death of 13 people, and injury of nearly a hundred people following a police firing. Following this, the Tamilnadu government ordered permanent closure of the Sterlite plant.

The Police and revenue officials have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal code, including criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation, robbery, dacoity, public servants disobeying law with intent to cause injury, and public servants framing incorrect document with intent to cause injury.

The protests against Sterlite’s factory started in March 2013 following a gas leak that resulted in the death of one person and injuries of several others. Permanent closure of the plant was ordered by the Tamilnadu government on May 28 after protestors said the copper plant was responsible for extreme pollution in the region.
